2010 NFL Draft

Jerry Jones, the man who signs the checks around Valley Ranch, had said the wide receiver spot wasn't a need for the Dallas Cowboys.

But on Thursday night, the first of the extended three-day NFL draft, Jones made a bold decision, moving up to take Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant.

However, those two signal-callers aren't the only big names left. Find out who Scouts Inc. predicts will be taken with each pick on Day 2.

Jones and his coaches, scouts and front office personnel rated three players they had to have -- Texas safety Earl Thomas, Idaho guard Mike Iupati and Bryant.

When the deal was done, offensive coordinator Jason Garrett gave a fist bump to Jerry Jones Jr. Wade Phillips, the head coach, smiled.

"We saw it coming," Jones said of the trade. "So we didn't have to hesitate or be apprehensive about it."

The Cowboys should, because drafting Bryant comes with risks.

If the Patriots don't come away with help for their pass rush and defensive line by the end of the third round, then perhaps it will be time to sharpen the knives a bit more.

But rip the Patriots for selecting their top-rated player in the first round? Absolutely not.

Drafting on that principle, albeit unpopular with some, is a winning formula as long as your scouting process is sound.

Twitter Reveals The Ad Platform

In advance of its Chirp conference in San Francisco, Twitter on Tuesday unveiled a new ad platform that will display advertiser-backed tweets atop search results.

The venture, dubbed Promoted Tweets, is the micro-blogging site's first foray into the traditional advertising-supported Web model. Twitter has thus far resisted this model "because we wanted to optimize value before profit," said co-founder Biz Stone.

Twitter's strategy is a canny one. It has made its application programming interface widely available to the developer community, who have fallen over themselves to jump on the Twitter bandwagon. Indeed, much of Twitter's success stems from the ecosystem created by these software writers: they have made it possible to automatically shorten web addresses in a tweet to make it easier to stick to the 140 character limit;

they have streamlined the process of sharing photos through the microblogging site; they've made it easy for people to manage and keep track of multiple Twitter accounts through their desktop or mobile phone; and have made it possible to search Twitter for trending topics, create and share lists of interesting Twitter users, and even get instant answers to questions.

While Twitter and Palo Alto, California-based Facebook are gaining users, some rivals are struggling. AOL Inc. said last week it is evaluating the sale or shutdown of social-networking site Bebo, less than two years after spending $850 million to buy the business.
